Doctors have many important responsibilities to their patients. As part of their jobs, they are required to determine what medication and in what amount -- if any -- is appropriate. As such, they have the ability to write prescriptions for drugs that people can not otherwise legally obtain. Unfortunately, law enforcement officials claim that one doctor in Missouri abused this ability, resulting in felony drug charges.
The case involves a 34-year-old doctor. Police say that the woman pretended to be a patient in an effort to obtain prescription pills. She is accused of using her prescription pad to write prescriptions for drugs such as oxycodone and hydrocodone in someone else's name. She would then allegedly pose as a patient to get the prescription filled.
Authorities claim that the woman also used another doctor's prescription pad to write prescriptions. She was recently indicted on two counts of fraudulently obtaining narcotic opioid prescription drugs. While reports indicate a variety of different law enforcement agents worked together on the case, it is unclear what originally led to suspicions regarding the doctor.
Unfortunately, drug charges such as these can have a variety of different consequences, potentially ending a medical professional's career. As such, it may be especially important for defendants in such cases to seek guidance from a criminal defense attorney with experience with such cases. With such a person on her side, the Missouri doctor may feel better prepared to make the decisions facing her, including how to best respond to the felony drug charges of which she is accused.
