Car accidents can happen to anyone at any time. Unfortunately, those driving late at night who may be experiencing fatigue may be especially at risk of being involved in an accident. However, a person's behavior following a crash caused by a simple mistake could easily be misinterpreted by law enforcement officials who may already be primed to assume the worst. In fact, it is unclear what evidence supports claims that a driver who was recently injured in a Missouri car accident was driving while intoxicated, or DWI.
The incident is said to have happened just after 11 p.m. on a day in early January. Reports indicate that a 23-year-old driver fell asleep while at the wheel of a pickup truck. The truck reportedly crossed the centerline before exiting the left side of the road. The vehicle reportedly came to a stop after it struck a ditch and rolled.
Police say that the driver was not wearing a seat belt. Though the truck reportedly sustained major damage, the driver only suffered minor injuries. He was arrested soon after the accident but was released to seek medical treatment.
Although he is reportedly suspected of DWI, it is unclear what led police officers to the belief that the man was intoxicated at the time of the collision. Unfortunately, the aftermath of an accident such as this can often be overwhelming in itself.
