Missouri police recently arrested a woman who they say caused a fatal, head-on collision. She was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the accident and is now facing DWI charges. This is apparently not her first drunk driving related offense, which could potentially effect her current criminal charges.
The 34-year-old woman had apparently been drinking before getting behind the wheel of her vehicle. According to police, she merged onto the northbound lanes of Interstate 435 while traveling south. The 26-year-old male driver of a vehicle on the northbound side of the interstate was unable to avoid the wrong-way driver and the two collided head-on. The male driver suffered fatal injuries in the collision while the woman's vehicle caught on fire.
One of the officers who responded to the accident said that he smelled alcohol on the woman. He also noted that her eyes appeared glassy and bloodshot, which can be signs of intoxication. Although the driver refused to submit to a blood test, police were able to obtain a search warrant to determine her blood-alcohol content.
The driver was convicted of a convicted of DWI back in Jan. 2016, and while past criminal charges are no indication of guilt for current allegations, they can still complicate matters. Second-offense DWI charges often carry steeper penalties and severely impact a person's ability to maintain their employment or driving privileges. Because of this, defendants in Missouri who are facing DWI charges are usually well advised to begin working on their criminal defense plans as early on as possible.
