Depending on the area where a person lives, a person may spend a significant amount of time driving. Because it is such a common activity for many in Missouri, it may be easy to take for granted the potential for an accident that can cause significant damage, even if its cause was due to a mistaken turn. Unfortunately, police can easily interpret a mistake that caused an accident as a sign of intoxication, resulting in an accusation of DWI.
In fact, a 37-year-old woman is facing such a charge following a fatal accident. The incident reportedly happened on a Missouri intersection on a day in June. Witnesses claim that they passed the woman -- who they claim was headed west in the eastbound lanes of traffic -- while she drove in the center lane.
One driver claims to have been looking in the rear-view mirror when the woman allegedly crashed head-on with a car driven by a 44-year-old woman. The latter reportedly died in the collision. Police say that the alleged wrong-way driver required extrication and that they discovered a liquor bottle in the front seat that had been "partially consumed." One law enforcement officer claims to have detected the odor of alcohol on the woman's breath. Though a blood test was administered, the results are unclear.
The woman now faces a charge of felony DWI as a result of the collision. While the criminal justice system can seem overwhelming regardless of the circumstances, it may be especially difficult for the Missouri woman to feel sufficiently confident to make decisions that will impact the rest of her life while also coming to terms with the physical and emotional impact of the accident.
